Shell welding is a specialised repair used for plastic and acetate frames when a temple, bridge, or other part has cracked or completely broken. Instead of discarding the frame, we bond the pieces together restoring both strength and appearance.
-
Over time, shell (acetate or plastic) frames can develop scratches, scuffs, or a dull finish, which affects their appearance and feel. Buffing and polishing restores the frame’s original smoothness and shine, giving it a refreshed, like-new look.
-
Screw Replacement – sourcing and fitting the correct size rimlock screw to securely fasten lenses.
Thread Restoration – re-tapping or reinforcing worn threads so screws tighten properly.
Rimlock Hinge Repair – repairing bent or misaligned locking arms to ensure a flush lens fit.
Complete Rimlock Replacement – installing a new rimlock assembly if the original is beyond repair.
-
Extract Broken Screws – removing jammed or snapped screws from hinges, rimlocks, and pad arms.
Restore Threads – re-tapping or reinforcing stripped threads to accept a new screw securely.
Replace Hardware – fitting a new, correct-sized screw or rivet to restore proper function.
Final Alignment – checking the hinge or pad arm movement to ensure smooth, reliable operation.
This repair saves frames that might otherwise be written off due to a simple but stubborn broken screw.

Adjustable pad arms allow for precise customization of the fit and comfort of glasses by modifying the position of the nose pads. At Optics Workshop, we provide a complete service for both adding pad arms to frames that didn’t originally have them and repairing or replacing existing pad arms.
At Optics Workshop, we specialise in repairing and refurbishing a wide range of glasses and sunglasses, from everyday frames to designer and specialty materials. If you’re unsure whether your frame can be repaired, contact us with photos or questions — we’re happy to advise.
